** APL feeder ships seen to modernize Batangas port
by :Andy Dalisay 8/10/00
The recent move of APL Philippines, the container shipping subsidiary of
Singapore's Neptune Orient Lines, to put two of its feeder ships at the port of
Batangas for their regular calls may signal the harbor's imminent development as
an alternative gateway to the industrializing Calabarzon.
Located in Sta. Clara, a few minutes from Batangas City, the port has a yard
capacity at approximately 50,000 TEUs that can be extended as demand requires.
Its operator, the Asian Terminals Inc subsidiary Aries Arrastre Services, has an
exclusive contract with the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA). Though the port of
Batangas does not have a gantry crane yet, APL uses self-sustaining vessels that
have their own cranes for lifting the boxes. The terminal handling equipment
that Aries Arrastre provides compliments the vessels crane resulting in adequate
operational efficiency. By next year, the port is expected to receive delivery
of a new gantry crane that will provide faster turnaround time.
From January to May this year, the port handled 1,206 TEU for box traffic, while
bulk cargoes posted 157,134 tons. Non-containerized cargoes that pass the harbor
include fertilizers, rice, steel and project cargoes for power plants.
Previously, the national highway was the only thoroughfare being used to
transport inland cargo to and from the port, and the only areas with rush-hour
traffic are located in the Tanauan and Lipa proper. That makes travel time from
Calamba an average of two hours due to traffic. Now the local government is
constructing the Southern Tagalog Access Road, also known as the Calabarzon
Road, which stretches from Sto. Tomas directly to the port. Portions of the road
network that gets out of the congested areas are already completed and are being
used by all types of vehicles, lessening travel time from Calamba to the port.
The Bureau of Customs is currently located within the city proper. However, a
new building is currently under construction within the port that would make
process of customs papers faster. The building will be operational before the
year ends. A dedicated on-dock APL office has been operational within the port.
The computerized APL facility caters to customer service and port operations.
Shippers can avail of the documents for processing right at the port.
** Bacnotan Steel Industries, Inc. is the biggest and most modern Philippine

Bacnotan Consolidated Industries, along with Bank of the Philippine Islands and
Philippine National Bank.
BSII has an annual capacity of 300,000 metric tons. It uses cutting-edge
technology from Kawasaki Steel. The BSII plant is in The PHINMA Group's Batangas
Union Industrial Park at Balayan Bay in Calaca, Batangas, just south of Manila.
